Osprey Reef is an isolated seamount in the Coral Sea off the northern Great Barrier Reef, Australia. This study of a resident population of whitetip reef sharks, Triaenodon obesus, at the North Horn of Osprey Reef has been conducted since 1995.

Individuals within the population have been identified, tagged and measured. A number of mature females have been tracked to give information on their daily and seasonal movement patterns and home range.

There is very little known about the basic biology and ecology of tropical sharks. Over recent years there has been an increased concern over the status of shark stocks around the world. The reproductive strategies and life history of sharks make them extremely vulnerable to overfishing.

The opportunity to spend a week diving at the remote Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea with resident whitetip, grey reef, silvertip and hammerhead sharks and expert shark biologists is only possible with Undersea Explorer.

A wide variety of shark species can be encountered during an expedition to Osprey Reef. Resident sharks are the whitetip reef, grey reef, silvertip and scalloped hammerheads, while occasional encounters with whale sharks, thresher, tiger, oceanic whitetip, leopard and great hammerhead sharks occur.
